Incline Treadmill (45 levels) vs Stairmaster: What burns more calories?

When it comes to fat loss and cardio training, two of the most popular gym machines are the StairMaster and the incline treadmill. Both can deliver intense workouts, improve cardiovascular fitness, and strengthen the lower body — but which one burns more calories?

The answer depends on workout intensity, duration, and incline level. However, a treadmill with an ultra-high incline, such as up to 45%, will generally burn more calories overall than a StairMaster.

Calorie Burn Comparison

Here’s an estimated calorie burn for a person weighing around 75–85 kg during a 30-minute workout:

Machine Estimated Calories Burned
StairMaster 300–500 calories
Standard Incline Treadmill (10–15%) 250–450 calories
High Incline Treadmill (30–45%) 450–700+ calories

A high-incline treadmill creates a “mountain climbing” effect that significantly increases heart rate and muscle engagement without requiring high running speeds.

Why a 45% Incline Treadmill Burns More Calories

A treadmill with a steep incline forces your body to work against gravity continuously. This increases energy expenditure and activates multiple muscle groups at once.

Key Benefits of High Incline Training

  • Increased calorie burn
  • Greater glute and hamstring activation
  • Improved cardiovascular endurance
  • Lower impact compared to running
  • Better long-duration sustainability

Walking at 5–6 km/h on a steep incline can sometimes rival the calorie burn of running on flat ground. Many athletes use incline treadmill training to simulate uphill hiking, sled pushes, and endurance conditioning.

Muscles Worked

A steep incline treadmill targets:

  • Glutes
  • Hamstrings
  • Calves
  • Core
  • Hip flexors

Because your body remains in continuous forward motion, the workout becomes highly demanding over time.

Benefits of the StairMaster

The StairMaster remains one of the best cardio machines for lower-body endurance and conditioning.

Why People Love the StairMaster

  • Constant stepping resistance
  • Excellent glute-focused workout
  • Strong cardiovascular challenge
  • Compact movement with controlled intensity

What does the Stair Climber work? – Lifespan Fitness

The StairMaster is difficult to “cheat” because the movement pattern requires continuous stepping. Many people also prefer it for shorter, high-intensity cardio sessions.

Incline Treadmill vs StairMaster: Which Is Better?

Choose an Incline Treadmill If You Want:

  • Maximum calorie burn
  • Fat loss support
  • Low-impact cardio
  • Hiking simulation
  • Longer endurance workouts

Choose a StairMaster If You Want:

  • Strong glute activation
  • Intense shorter sessions
  • Stair-climbing endurance
  • Compact stepping workouts

Final Verdict

Both machines are excellent for cardiovascular fitness and lower-body conditioning. However, if the goal is maximum calorie burn and full-body endurance training, a high incline treadmill — especially one capable of reaching 30–45% incline — usually has the advantage.

Incline treadmill workouts combine the benefits of uphill hiking, strength training, and steady-state cardio into one highly effective session.

Mine is brand new and under warranty and is already playing up with the inclined and decline not working properly and not corresponding to the digital display. Spoken to Supplier they requested alot of videos and explanations via whatsapp, told me they will send a technician out instead of supplying a new machine ,I have now been waiting for over a month for a a tech to come and fix ,was told 14 days max wait time.Had to contact them again and now been told technician was busy and now going to send another ???
Apart from that this Tredmil would be a great if it worked properly and the customer services was more effective.

GREAT TREADMILL - ENDURANCE STP

I bought the STP treadmill for my wife and I because we were sick of making excuses as to why we couldn't go for our daily walk - too hot, too cold etc., etc.! One of the best decisions we have made, as we can now enjoy walking no matter what the weather is and in the safety of our own home. The STP model has all the features and programmes to suit our senior age . Delivery was fast and the treadmill was easy to assemble.
