Treadmill Motor Type

The motor is the core of any treadmill, and its type and power significantly influence your workout experience. Here are the main options:

  • DC Motors: Affordable but often noisy and prone to wear, suitable for light use or occasional jogging.
  • AC Motors: More durable and quieter, ideal for frequent workouts and higher speeds.
  • Brushless AC Motors: Provide smooth, powerful performance and superior longevity, perfect for serious runners and intensive training.

I recommend investing a bit more in a treadmill with a high-quality motor, such as an AC or brushless AC motor, for a better overall experience.

Running Belt

Your comfort and stability largely depend on the quality of the treadmill belt. Here are key factors to consider:

  • Width and Thickness: A belt wider than 46 cm (18 inches) offers more room for a natural stride, and a thickness of at least 2 ply provides better cushioning and impact absorption.
  • Length: The appropriate belt length depends on your height and stride length, with taller individuals needing to ensure the belt accommodates their longer strides for comfortable running.
  • Material: Textured belts offer superior grip, especially useful for incline workouts, while smooth belts are gentler on the knees. Choose based on your preferences and workout style.

Treadmill Speed and Incline Range

Don't let the numbers overwhelm you! Select a treadmill with speed and incline ranges that match your current fitness level and goals:

  • Beginners: A maximum speed of 16 km/h (10 mph) and an incline of 12% should be adequate for comfortable walking and jogging.
  • Intermediate Runners: Speeds up to 20 km/h (12 mph) and inclines of 15% will help you challenge yourself and advance your training.
  • Advanced Runners: Opt for treadmills with speeds of 24 km/h (15 mph) or higher and inclines over 20% to push your limits.

Cushioning and Suspension

Running on a treadmill can sometimes be tough on your knees, leading to discomfort or even injury over time. To mitigate this, it's essential to choose a treadmill equipped with excellent cushioning. For instance, Reflex™ Cushioning found on NordicTrack treadmills or ShockControl™ Cushioning featured on Lifespan Fitness treadmills are designed specifically to absorb impact and reduce stress on your joints. These advanced cushioning systems help to distribute the force of each stride more evenly, thereby protecting your knees and ankles from the repetitive impacts of running. Investing in a treadmill with such cushioning technology can make a significant difference in your overall running experience, ensuring that your workouts are not only effective but also kinder to your joints. With proper cushioning, you can enjoy a more comfortable run and reduce the risk of joint-related issues in the long term.

Console Features

The console on a treadmill is more than just a display screen; it's like having a dedicated workout companion that motivates and guides you through your fitness journey. When evaluating treadmill consoles, look for a variety of features that can enhance your workout experience:

  • Heart Rate Monitoring: This feature allows you to keep an eye on your heart rate, ensuring you are exercising within your optimal heart rate zone. This is crucial for achieving your fitness goals efficiently, whether you're aiming for weight loss, improved cardiovascular health, or increased endurance.
  • Built-in Workout Programs: A treadmill with built-in workout programs offers a range of preset routines that can keep your exercise regimen varied and engaging. These programs can be tailored to different fitness objectives, such as fat burning, interval training, or endurance building, helping you stay motivated and on track.
  • App Compatibility: Modern treadmills often come with the ability to connect to various fitness apps like iFit, Kinomap, and Zwift. This compatibility allows you to integrate music, videos, and even virtual running routes into your workouts. These interactive features can make your exercise sessions more enjoyable and immersive, providing an additional layer of motivation and engagement.

By selecting a treadmill with these advanced console features, you can transform your workout experience, making it not only more effective but also more enjoyable and personalized. The console becomes an essential part of your fitness routine, offering real-time feedback, diverse training options, and interactive entertainment that keeps you motivated and committed to your goals.

Additional Features to Consider

When choosing a treadmill, don't overlook additional features that can significantly enhance your overall experience and ensure both safety and enjoyment during your workouts:

  • Safety Features: Prioritize treadmills equipped with essential safety mechanisms such as emergency stop buttons, which allow you to quickly halt the machine in case of an accident. Additionally, incline and decline limits are crucial for preventing mishaps and ensuring a controlled workout environment.
  • Entertainment Options: To make your treadmill sessions more enjoyable, look for models that offer built-in entertainment features. Integrated speakers can play your favorite music, while a TV mount allows you to watch shows or movies as you exercise. These entertainment options can keep you motivated and engaged, making long runs or walks more pleasant.
  • Folding and Storage: If you have limited space at home, consider investing in a foldable treadmill. These models often come with wheels, making them easy to move and store away when not in use. This feature is especially beneficial for maintaining a clutter-free workout area and maximizing your available space.

To protect your investment and ensure your treadmill operates smoothly over time, pay attention to:

  • Warranty Coverage: Familiarize yourself with the warranty terms provided by the manufacturer. A comprehensive warranty can offer peace of mind by covering potential repairs and replacements, safeguarding your purchase against unexpected issues.
  • Routine Maintenance: Regular maintenance is key to extending the lifespan of your treadmill. Ensure that you keep the machine well-lubricated and routinely adjust the belt to maintain optimal performance. Performing these simple maintenance tasks can prevent wear and tear, reducing the likelihood of costly repairs and keeping your treadmill in top condition.

By considering these additional features and maintenance practices, you can significantly enhance your treadmill experience, ensuring safety, entertainment, and longevity of your equipment. This approach not only makes your workouts more effective and enjoyable but also protects your investment for years to come.

Conclusion

Treadmills are a versatile and convenient choice for cardio workouts, offering an accessible way to stay active regardless of weather conditions. Navigating the variety of treadmill specs and features can be daunting, but this guide simplifies the process by highlighting key aspects such as motor types, belt quality, speed and incline ranges, cushioning systems, and console features. By considering additional elements like safety features, entertainment options, and maintenance requirements, you can find a treadmill that perfectly suits your fitness level and goals, ensuring a safe, effective, and enjoyable exercise experience.

Excellent Treadmill Experience – Great Value for Money

I had a fantastic experience purchasing this treadmill. The sales team was extremely patient and provided thorough explanations to help me choose the right model. Delivery was fast and the packaging was secure—everything arrived in perfect condition. The treadmill itself feels safe, sturdy, and easy to use. It’s also stylish and runs smoothly. For the price, the quality is outstanding—truly great value for money. After-sales service has been very helpful and responsive as well. Overall, I’m very satisfied and highly recommend it!

Endurance SPT 1 year ownership review

This review is for the Endurance SPT after 1 year of ownership.

I'll start by saying the online support prior to delivery was excellent. Our treadmill was purchased just prior to Christmas 2023 whilst on sale through Endurance's official Amazon shop. We were departing for holidays within a few days and were in the predicament of possibly having the treadmill delivered whilst being away. We reached out and their support was very good and responsive, and were able to organise from memory a next day delivery (we live in Sydney).

The treadmill is a medium size and weight, giving it a solid enough feel in build quality and stability, however remaining light enough to be easily moved around by myself or wife if needed. As other reviews may have mentioned, set up may be quite difficult if done alone, however instructions and steps are itself easy.

Here are my likes, dislikes, and observations from the last year of ownership.

Likes:
User interface - simple as a treadmill should be with large buttons as well as controls on the handles
Running belt - made of a hard-wearing plastic material which provides plenty of grip however also won't cause friction burns on intermittent skin contact (safer with children)
Form factor - Being able to fold up the treadmill and move it around the house is great
Speed and incline options - More than enough settings for 99% of the population
Finish - The materials used and the coatings on the frame are good quality and show almost no wear from a year of use

Dislikes:
Heartrate sensors - Located on the handles, these sensors are probably only for those continuously walking. They take too long to establish a reading (e.g. walking after conducting a run)
Lack of waterproofing - This may sound silly, however I myself generate a lot of sweat during a run, and there are a couple vulnerable points on the treadmill where water/sweat may ingress. These include the speed/incline adjustment buttons on the handles, the usb port, and the speakers. This vulnerability is serious enough that even after a wipe down after every use, I have had an instance where the treadmill was unable to turn on for multiple days in a row due to this. To combat this I now have to drape a towel over the whole upper section of the treadmill when in use by myself.

Other observations:
Size of the track - I am 175cm tall and find the track a perfectly adequate size for running. I would still say the track size does initially take getting used to and you will find yourself consciously aware of the sides and end of the track, however this is no longer a factor.
Somewhat limited quick-select speeds - I think more space on the interface should be dedicated to adjusting the speed and less controlling the incline. Quick-select buttons on the screen interface only go up in speeds of 2km/h up to 10km/h which can mean constantly holding down the increase button for a short while if you want to run at speeds greater than 10km/h (only increases in increments of 0.1km/h per press).
Pricing - I think at the time whilst on sale, this treadmill was a very good purchase and great value, however whilst writing this review there are currently some other comparable treadmills which I would say are very competitively priced.
