How to Care for Your Feet as You Get Older

How to Care for Your Feet as You Get Older
OUR FEET ARE EASY TO NEGLECT – BUT THEY NEED SOME LOVING CARE, ESPECIALLY AS WE GET OLDER, PODIATRIST EMILY SMITH EXPLAINS.
From the day we start walking, our feet are subject to extreme conditions. The foot is an extremely resilient part of the body, but its biological age and appearance are influenced by many factors, both internal and external, all compounded by its complex musculoskeletal structure.

Modern-day activity and poor footwear are the most common causes of premature aging of the foot. Other factors can include genetic foot posture disposition, body weight, a systemic disease like rheumatoid arthritis, lack of essential dietary nutrients and too much, or too little, weight-bearing exercise.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR FEET AS YOU AGE?
Ageing of the foot is often associated with degeneration of the bones, joints, soft tissue and fat pad (the internal protective cushion in our feet). Long-term exposure to excessive load and abnormal forces acting upon the foot (i.e. high physical load or inappropriate footwear) can lead to arthritis, deformity, reduced function, or loss of the fat pad.

In older people, it’s common to find signs of arthritis, thinning of the fat pad, clawing of the toes, bunions, and dorsal lumps, as well as calluses and nail complaints associated with foot deformities.

However, advanced wear and tear can also be seen in younger people, particularly those who wear a lot of unsupportive footwear, ex-athletes, people with genetically-predisposed foot postures (i.e. excessively flat feet) and people who have highly physical occupations.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR FEET
Apply these simple tips to slow down the ageing of your feet:

Choose the right footwear

To make sure your shoes fit and function well, look for:

  • Shoes with a suitable length – not too short and not too long.
  • Appropriate width (not too tight or too loose), with the right shape to fit your foot.
  • Adequately fastened shoes that are securely fitted onto the foot without requiring gripping or activation of your toes to hold it in place.
Care for your shoes

As much as you can, try to:

  • Replace or repair your footwear before the wear and tear start to show.
  • Avoid hand-me-downs of footwear – they rarely fit appropriately and are often ‘worn in’ to the previous owner’s foot.
Give your feet some love

Here are a few strategies you can use to treat and prevent aches and pains:

  • Use a tennis ball to massage your foot at the end of the day.
  • Stretch the top of your foot and your toes by using your hand to apply downward pressure across the toes. While sitting barefoot, without assistance spread your toes.
  • Hold the toe spread position for as long as possible and repeat five times daily.
  • Stretch your calf muscles daily by dropping your foot off a step.Hold for 30 seconds and repeat five times each leg.
Take care of your general health and fitness

Keep your body in optimal shape by:

  • Maintaining a healthy bodyweight.
  • Eating a well-balanced diet.
  • Undertaking regular weight-bearing exercise of more than 30 mins per day.
  • Seeking specialist medical opinion for assessment of ongoing pain or injury.

Endurance Athlete - great so far

So far so good. I had a good experience with ordering and receiving multiple personal phone calls to discuss the product and advise when it would be delivered.
Easy set up and the instructional booklet is decent. Works great with the Fitshow App.
There's only just enough oil to lubricate the belt for the first month of use. Good options exist on Amazon which have a syringe and extension tube to get the oil to the right spots.
It's quiet and so far I'm very pleased with it after a month

Impressive Quality For Treadmill That Folds Flat

I've been extremely impressed with the Endurance Athlete Model Treadmill. Living in a small apartment, I was worried about finding a treadmill that offered the performance I wanted without taking up too much space, but this treadmill has exceeded my expectations. It provides the performance of a much larger treadmill which is impressive. My favourite feature is how easily it folds away. Being able to store it flat under the bed or against a wall is a huge advantage, especially when space is limited. Unlike other compact treadmills I've tried, there is absolutely no compromise on stability, quality, or performance. If you're living in an apartment or simply don't have room for a bulky treadmill, I highly recommend this treadmill

Mine is brand new and under warranty and is already playing up with the inclined and decline not working properly and not corresponding to the digital display. Spoken to Supplier they requested alot of videos and explanations via whatsapp, told me they will send a technician out instead of supplying a new machine ,I have now been waiting for over a month for a a tech to come and fix ,was told 14 days max wait time.Had to contact them again and now been told technician was busy and now going to send another ???
Apart from that this Tredmil would be a great if it worked properly and the customer services was more effective.

GREAT TREADMILL - ENDURANCE STP

I bought the STP treadmill for my wife and I because we were sick of making excuses as to why we couldn't go for our daily walk - too hot, too cold etc., etc.! One of the best decisions we have made, as we can now enjoy walking no matter what the weather is and in the safety of our own home. The STP model has all the features and programmes to suit our senior age . Delivery was fast and the treadmill was easy to assemble.
